Tension gripped Pilkhana in Howrah after a local promoter, Shafiq Khan, was allegedly shot dead at point-blank range. The incident took place in the Golabari area when the victim had stepped out of his house during Ramzan. According to allegations, two men identified as Harun and Rohin opened fire at close range, hitting him in the head and chest.
CCTV footage from the area purportedly shows the accused speaking with the victim on the road moments before firing four rounds. Shafiq collapsed on the spot and was declared dead. Police from Golabari Police Station reached the scene, recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem, launching an investigation into the motive behind the killing.
The murder triggered widespread unrest in the locality. Enraged residents staged repeated protests demanding immediate arrest of the accused. Several sheds were set on fire and bikes and furnishings were vandalised as tension escalated.
A large police force was deployed to bring the situation under control, and minor force was reportedly used to disperse the crowd. Locals have warned that protests will continue until the accused are arrested, while police said efforts are on to trace the two suspects.
